To ensure that the water in the aquarium is always clear and suitable for fish to live in, it needs to be constantly cleaned. Purification is carried out using various filters - bottom, internal or external. The type of filter device is chosen based on the volume of the aquarium and the number of inhabitants. For larger aquariums, the Tetra Ex 800 Plus external filter is well suited.
The filter is placed outside the aquarium
Characteristics of external filters
The name of the external filter speaks for itself - the filter unit is not placed in the water, but next to the aquarium, outside. To maintain the aesthetics of the room, external filters are placed in a lockable cabinet under the aquarium.
External filtering devices operate on the following principle: water from the aquarium is pumped through an intake tube and hose into the filter, where it passes through the filter material, and after cleaning it is returned back to the aquarium.

The advantage of external filters over internal ones is the possibility of multi-stage water purification. In external devices, water is subjected to the following types of purification:
- Mechanical - water passes through a fine-mesh sponge, which traps the smallest particles of dirt.
- Biological - additional compartments of the device are filled with biomaterials, which serve as a substrate for the proliferation of beneficial bacteria. Without these bacteria, it is impossible to maintain the normal biological balance of aquarium water; beneficial microorganisms affect its hardness and acidity.
- Chemical - special compartments are filled with adsorbent substances (activated carbon, ion exchange resins). Adsorbents absorb toxins formed as a result of the vital activity of aquarium inhabitants, as well as medicinal substances that remain in the water after treatment of fish.
Beginner aquarists are faced with a difficult task when choosing a filter: they find it difficult to decide which type of filter device to choose - external or internal. Internal filters are less noisy in operation, do not cause installation difficulties and cost much less than external devices.
Be careful when choosing a filter
But external filters have several undeniable advantages:
- there is no restriction on the volume of purified water: external units are suitable for large professional aquariums;
- external devices do not affect the temperature of the aquarium water, while internal devices increase it due to the heat generated by the pump;
- the possibility of combining external cleaners with auxiliary mechanisms - a UV sterilizer, an aeration system;
- external filtering devices do not take up the useful area of the aquarium and do not spoil its decorative effect.

Tetra EX800 Plus, external aquarium filter, with fillers (from 100 to 300 l)
The external aquarium filter Tetra EX800 Plus is suitable for purifying water in containers from 100 to 300 liters. It is the most important equipment for an aquarium and is designed for complete water purification. The Tetra EX800 Plus external aquarium filter provides effective filtration of water in any aquarium of at least 100 liters. Contaminated aquarium water is purified thanks to 5 different types of filter media. The water passes through ceramic rings, bio-balls, a traditional sponge, carbon media and a fiber pad, which remove various dirt particles and provide biological, mechanical and chemical filtration. — Cleaning the filter and replacing fillers is made easier by the presence of convenient handles on each of the filter baskets. — The drain tube and hose can be easily adjusted to suit any size of aquarium. — Valves installed at the water inlet and outlet allow the flow to be precisely adjusted to suit specific requirements. — To clean, simply close the valves completely, then disconnect the adapter from the filter itself. In this case, the water remains in the hoses, which makes it possible not to re-pump it the next time the filter is connected. Depending on the level of contamination and wear, filter media must be changed approximately every 6–12 months. - Provides crystal clear and safe water for fish, turning the aquarium into an unforgettable hobby. — Quick and easy cleaning of filter media. — Incredibly powerful and quiet filter. — The kit includes everything you need for a quick and easy installation, including all filter media. — Includes a water pumping system to start the filter and valves for precise pressure control. — A system for quickly and safely isolating the filter from the water circulation. - Adjustable connections for easy hose connection. — Equipped with a pre-filtration function to reduce the need for maintenance. — Quality confirmed by TÜV/GS certificates. You can choose any external Tetra aquarium filter in the Aquatrace online store, using the selection of the characteristics you need on the left side of the site. All Tetra filters have a manufacturer's warranty and have the necessary certificates. Why do you need an external filter? To keep fish and plants healthy, aquarium water must be constantly passed through a filtration system.

Selection rules
The choice of external filter should be based on the characteristics of the aquarium. Before purchasing, it is advisable to study the parameters of the models offered in stores. Taking the time to learn about filter devices will help you make the right choice.
When purchasing, focus on the following parameters:
- Productivity means the ability of the device to pass a certain amount of water through itself in a set time. The power of the device is indicated on the packaging, measured in liters per hour (l/h). For an aquarium with a volume of 100-200 l, it is recommended to choose a filter with a capacity of at least 700 l/h.
- Noise – The outdoor filter may not be silent, but it should not be very loud.
- Build quality, availability of spare parts - the filter device is purchased for a long time, so you need to think about possible breakdowns and the possibility of repair.
- Manufacturer - on the market you can find many inexpensive little-known models for which sellers do not provide a guarantee, and service centers do not undertake repairs. It is better to buy a more expensive model, but produced by a reputable company. In this way, you can protect yourself from financial losses during the operation of the filter device.

Read the instructions
The filter is equipped with filter materials and is ready for use; pay attention to the consumables that you will need to service the filter in the future:
Tetra FF S - fine cleaning sponges (sintepon mats), which should be replaced every time the filter is cleaned. Cannot be washed or reused
Tetra BF S is a coarse sponge. These sponges are washed and reused many times. They must be replaced as they wear out, when the sponge begins to fit poorly to the edges of the filter basket. It should be replaced with a new one every 1-2 years.
Tetra CF - activated carbon in bags. Coal does not always need to be used all the time. It is usually used if there is something in the aquarium that changes the color of the water (for example, new driftwood), to remove drug residues, and also in aquariums without live plants. In aquariums with live plants, carbon will take microelements from the water that the plants need, so it is usually not used, only when necessary. If used, activated carbon must be replaced once every 1-1.5 months. Tetra BB - plastic balls for colonization of beneficial bacteria. There is no point in replacing this filler, like Tetra CR ceramic rings. If only for more effective (and expensive) absorbents, resins, etc., you can choose a filler here
Also, over time, you will have to replace the pre-filter sponge, which prevents large dirt from getting inside the filter, thus postponing the need to completely clean the filter. You can wash it as often as you like. It’s best to do it once a week, during a water change.
