Cleaning the filter and replacing fillers is made easier by the presence of convenient handles on each of the filter baskets. The drain tube and hose can be easily adjusted to suit any size of aquarium. Valves installed at the water inlet and outlet allow the water flow to be precisely adjusted to suit specific requirements.
To clean, simply close the valves completely, then disconnect the adapter from the filter itself. In this case, the water remains in the hoses, which makes it possible not to re-pump it the next time the filter is connected.
Depending on the level of contamination and wear, filter media must be changed approximately every 6–12 months.

The filter is equipped with filter materials and is ready for use; pay attention to the consumables that you will need to service the filter in the future:
Tetra FF L - fine cleaning sponges (sintepon mats), which should be replaced every time the filter is cleaned. Cannot be washed or reused
Tetra BF L is a coarse sponge. These sponges are washed and reused many times. They must be replaced as they wear out, when the sponge begins to fit poorly to the edges of the filter basket. It should be replaced with a new one every 1-2 years.
Tetra CF - activated carbon in bags. Coal does not always need to be used all the time. It is usually used if there is something in the aquarium that changes the color of the water (for example, new driftwood), to remove drug residues, and also in aquariums without live plants. In aquariums with live plants, carbon will take microelements from the water that the plants need, so it is usually not used, only when necessary. If used, activated carbon must be replaced once every 1-1.5 months. Tetra BB - plastic balls for colonization of beneficial bacteria. There is no point in replacing this filler, like Tetra CR ceramic rings. If only for more effective (and expensive) absorbents, resins, etc., you can choose a filler here
Also, over time, you will have to replace the pre-filter sponge, which prevents large dirt from getting inside the filter, thus postponing the need to completely clean the filter. You can wash it as often as you like. It’s best to do it once a week, during a water change.

Technical characteristics of the Tetra EX plus external aquarium filter
Compared to Tetra EX series filters, the new version consumes significantly less energy (20-35% less). This makes Tetra EX plus even more economical! And this is of great importance, given that the filter operates around the clock.
Tetra EX plus filter pump
The characteristics of the Tetra Plus filter claim a capacity of 1200 liters per hour. Based on the results of testing the filter in different ways, it turned out that the declared performance corresponds to reality.
The pumping was tested:
- when the water rise height is zero (from a container on the floor);
- at a 90-centimeter lifting height;
- at 90 cm lifting height with connected external filter sterilizer.
Tetra EX plus filter head
Appearance is perfect: no microcracks, scratches, colored spots, casting quality is at a high level.
The head cover, unlike the previous Tetra EX series, received a second handle. Carrying the filter has become more convenient.
The start button has also undergone changes: the location of the seals has changed, which eliminates sticking of the button during long-term operation of the filter. The start button does not stick and presses very smoothly.
External filter head sealing system: a flat gasket was added to replace the O-ring, which eliminated the problem of the ring slipping off the filter head during installation.
Changes in the rotor: it began to turn (the “sticking” effect disappeared).
The filter head cover comes off quite easily. To do this you just need to unscrew 4 screws.
I am pleased with the thickness of the water inlet and outlet tubes in the filter. This makes the Tetra EX plus filter even more airtight.
For greater filter reliability and convenience, engineers moved the filter head latches to the canister only.
Faucet adapter: improved leakage protection. Due to improvements, the adapter has become a little heavier and larger in size.
Taps to shut off the flow: added stepwise adjustment of water flow. The flow adjustment is very smooth, the taps turn without much effort.
The filter baskets and Tetra EX plus filter media have not changed. There are still 4 baskets left, inside the filter they are collected into a single filter unit.
For Tetra EX plus filters the following media are used:
- ceramic rings (changed once a year);
- bio-balls (changed once a year);
- large-porous sponges (as they become dirty and the filter flow is lost, they should be washed with water from the aquarium);
- fine cleaning sponges (replaced when worn);
- activated carbon (not for frequent use).
